Bicycle package Öckerö

Bicycle package

The Öckerö islands stretch prettily like a band of pearls, between Vinga to the north and Marstrand to the south, in Gothenburg's northern archipelago. Each one of the ten islands has its own character, and a great way to explore them is from the bike saddle. To make it easy for you to find the best spots, we've put together a 3 day cycling package. As well as cycling you can enjoy walking, good food, lovely boat trips and the fascinating history of the islands.

Welcome to a 3 day ‘island hop’ exploring Öckerö’s 10 islands. You’ll travel by bike, ferry and on foot and stay at our cosy Bed & Bike on the main island, Öckerö.

Day 1 – Cycle to Rörö and hike through the nature reserve

After arrival, and a nice cup of caffe latte, you’ll hop up on your bikes or our hire bikes and ride north to Burö, to catch the yellow ferry to Rörö. When you get there take some time to explore Rörö harbour, which is home to ‘Astrid’, one of Sweden’s largest fishing vessels. The Lifeboat Station for the region is also based here. By the quayside you’ll find Röröboa Cafe och Restaurang, where you can pick up your packed lunch.

We recommend a cycle trip past the pretty seaside villas on the way to the little harbour of Apelvik in the northeast. On the west side of the island is a nature reserve with lovely walking trails. Towards the west there’s a large shingle beach and in the south a swim friendly sandy beach, where if you are lucky you’ll see the wild horses and sheep which graze on the heath.

  • Accommodation: Bed & Bike Öckerö
  • Meals: Packed lunch
  • Cycling: approx. 25 km plus hiking (the trail is 12 km in total)

Day 2 – Cycle to Björkö with a detour to Kalvsund or Grötö

After a filling breakfast buffet you’ll cycle to Öckerö ferry port for a boat trip to Björkö. The ferry passes Kalvsund, where you’ll find the Valen beacon and Bremerska villa. After landing at Framnäs, cycle north to Björkö harbour, where you can pick up your packed lunch at ‘Feskeboa’. Don’t miss a visit to Skeppshandeln while you’re there.

When you’re ready to move on from the harbour area, cycle north out of the town, then past pretty oak forests, open landscapes and the rocky outcrops so typical of Bohuslän until you reach the picturesque fishing village of Bovik. In season you can spot both orchids and blue wood anemones as you cycle along the lanes. On the way back you can detour to the nearby islands of Grötö or Kalvsund if you want.

After you’re back and have had a refreshing shower, it’s time to cycle down to the restaurants in Hönö Klåva, where we can recommend Tullhuset for fantastic fish dishes, or one of the other restaurants such as Franses Skärgårdspub, Lilling Cottage, Klova Hamnkrog, Skärgårdshotellet and Zivers Veranda.

  • Accommodation: Bed & Bike Öckerö
  • Meals: Breakfast and packed lunch
  • Cycling: approx. 30 km

Day 3 – Cycle to Hönö and Fotö

After breakfast cycle via Öckerö’s hembygdsmuseum heritage centre, Hönö art gallery and Galleri Gårda, then head south and over the bridge to the southernmost island, Fotö, where you can wander around the pretty seaside villas and fishing huts perched on the rocks. From there cycle to Hönö Klåva town centre, with its many lovely shops, restaurants and cafes.

At 12.00 climb onboard MS Belle–Amie which will take you, via the smaller islands and skerries in the archipelago, out on a very popular and fascinating guided tour to Vinga. The trip takes 2.5 hours. After returning, enjoy lunch at restaurant Tullhuset.
